Basic Ideas of Web Load Stress Testing

clock July 6, 2008 23:40 by author aliax

stress testing We are always very enthusiastic about traffic: we think the more visitors our website attracts, the more profitable our e-business must be. Well, that’s right, but, unfortunately, only to a certain limit. Too many visitors cause huge load on web server and network components, which results in website slowdown or even failure, web applications crash, and, consequently, customer dissatisfaction and distrust. What should be done? You must prepare for high traffic, find the bottlenecks in your web applications, and know exactly how many users your web server can handle without any risk of slowdown. External web load stress test might help you.

The easiest way to find the weak points of your web server and your network is to perform a web load stress test. Nowadays you can easily find a lot of both internal and external stress testing solutions. The internal tools, no matter how complex and expensive they are, have one common drawback: they are installed either on the web server that is to be tested, or on a computer, which belongs to the same network as the web server. Of course, this approach cannot give “clean” results, as in this case the testing application shares the hardware resources it should examine.

External web load stress testing solutions, on the contrary, are outside your network, which allows them to provide the most comprehensive picture of your web server behavior under heavy traffic load. An advanced external stress testing service usually has several testing agents (servers) situated in different parts of the world. The agents can simulate up to 10 000 simultaneous Internet visitors! Each simulated user may go through your web applications several times, that’s why the generated traffic may be really overwhelming. Of course, it’s up to you to choose how many “users” will connect to your web server and how many times.

What should you do during the test?

Your primary task is to monitor your web server hardware resources, such as CPU load, RAM, and hard disk usage. Your stress testing service provider will generate an extensive report for you, but your own logs will help you immensely.

Why is precise timing so important?

You must do your best not to miss the moment, when stress testing starts, that’s why the precise time on your system is the key issue here. The most serious stress testing services are synchronized with atomic clocks.

Web Monitoring Reliability

clock June 4, 2008 02:32 by author levon
Monitoring Website uptime once every 60-120 minutes is not very reliable method of determining server uptime. Such way of website monitoring gives an opportunity to catch the servers that out for long periods of time, but it is impossible to catch Web servers that intermittently have downtime for shorter periods of time. If tests are frequent the monitoring is much more exact, but the price is significantly higher. The more accurate method is to check every minute or so - for most individuals and organizations it is the only way to be sure that their web sever work without any faluress. Some companies even like to use server 'uptime' as a marketing gimmick - 'Hey, look everyone, 99,99% uptime' - which of course is not accurate - even load-balanced servers can experience a little downtime.

In contrast to present-day search systems that analyze only description it can recognize picture. Thus significance of pictures will depend on its content not description. Developers tested this system and found out that it gave out better results that present-day Google picture search system gave. Besides it is known that Google has just developed special software for child pornography control.

Future of Google AdSense.

clock April 18, 2008 05:02 by author levon
Peter Forret tried to forecast evolution of Google AdSense.

Google AdSense in newspapers: Google reserves advertising space in every circulation. This space is used depending on context.

Google AdSense and Wi-Fi: Google will cover the globe with free POPs. Google will know your exact location and this fact will be very useful for context ads.

Google AdSense and mobile phone: Google redeems cellular communication operator and provides services for free, In return you have to hear short advertising ads before you can speak. These ads are also selected according to context.

Google AdSense on roads: LCD screens are placed on roofs of taxies, on sides of buses and etc. Such screens also have connections with Wi-Fi POPs and ads are different depending on the place, current time and so on.

Such forecast seems to be too much pessimistic and unsophisticated. It is possible that Peter Forret is some kind of paranoiac and is afraid that someday Google will transmit its ads directly to his brains. But who knows!
